Senior dog's breast cancer lumps growing fast. What are my options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 13 years and 3 months old

Hi! A vet in another state diagnosed my 13 year old dog with cancer of the breast 2-3 months ago. At that time there were 3 small very hard lumps around one nipple. She is 13. He said she was in no pain, and that I choose choose chemo, or to let nature take its course until she showed symptoms. Given her age I decided to watch her. Over the last 3 weeks the lumps have grown into the size of a tennis ball...red, but she still seems in no pain and will let me touch it.

Chemo would not be my first choice in such a case, but surgical removal of the lumps should have been suggested to you. This is still an option, as those lumps are likely to continue growing at a fast pace and they will eventually start ulcerating which will cause a lot of problems. The surgery is obviously a risk, but it can give missey a better quality of life, even if it will not make her live longer.
