How long should a dog be on a pain and anti inflammatory Medicine

Without the background to this question, ie why the dog needs the anti-inflammatory/pain killing medicine this question cannot be answered. Some health conditions require that the animal is on those medicines for the rest of its life (such as in severe arthritis. Other conditions require pain medicine until it can be reasonably assumed that the condition does not cause any more pain. The same is valid for anti-inflammatories.
