My dog's lip and nose are swollen and worsening. Can I give Benadryl?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 55 lbs

My pit boxer has a swollen lip and nose area. I thought it was from us bumping heads but it has seemed to have grown worse. I have been iceing it and want to give her benadryll. Do you think that is okay?

Unfortunately, it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to prescribe any drugs, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because we can't say for sure it's safe for Moana to take a particular drug. You are correct that the swelling could be due to you two bumping heads, and Benadryl will not help that (it would be used for an allergic reaction). I would continue to ice the swelling for five minutes at a time a couple of times tonight, but if the swelling continues to get worse or she starts to have difficulty breathing, then I would take her into a vet immediately.

Don't give Moana any medications without speaking with your vet first and/or having her examined. Legally, we are prohibited from providing dosing information in the absence of a physical exam and patient-vet-client relationship. If she is having difficulty breathing, take her to the nearest veterinary ER or your vet. If needed, either can administer steroids or antihistamines after an exam.
