Why is my senior dog having painful, slow, difficult urination?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 10 years and 7 months old | 78 lbs

My dog is having a hard time urinating he doesn't hike his leg because it causes pain and the urine comes out slow. What could it be. He's about 10 years old.

The two main options are a urine infection or a urinary stone, from the symptoms described I would say that a stone would make more sense which means it is more urgent. You will need to take him to the vet, he will need to go under sedation and then either an ultrasound or xray will be done to check if it is indeed a stone blocking the urethra. Then under sedation the vet will insert a urinary catheter to deblock Toby.

Misty might have a urinary blockage, you must take him to the vet urgently in order to get it checked, if he is blocked he will need to have a urinary catheter placed to de-block him for a start, then later on he might need surgery in order to remove the stones from his bladder.
