My cat has kidney disease and anemia. Should I try EPO shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 years and 4 months old | 8 lbs

Hi. I’m terribly sorry to bother you but I’m currently so overwhelmed the bridge is looking appealing. My cat has CKD/CHF. ER vet said last week he’s anemic (13) and needs a transfusion, which he may or may not survive because it effects the heart.Said it would cause heart failure, and they could bring him out of it,but will kill kidneys(whatever’s left, they’re barely functioning now). Thoughts on EPO shot? Any input would be grateful. I don’t know what to do anymore. He gets fluids&Lasix.

Using EPO is definitely an option since your cat is so anemic. Over time, some cats will develop resistance but I have had good success with using EPO. Talk to your vet about the exact protocol and if he/she thinks it is an appropriate option for your cat. I am not sure of his kidney values but it definitely might be the best option to improve his anemia and increase his quality of life.
