My dog is limping on her back leg. Is it joint pain? What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My black lab has been limping on back leg for 2 weeks. I have checked her paws, streched each of her joints and tried keeping her activity to a minimum. She didnt respond to the stretching as if she had pain and she still walks on it a little. She mostly keeps it rigid and straight when she is walking and when she runs, she attempts to use it as little as possible. My best guess is it is some kind of joint issues. Anything i can do to help it heal?

Besides rest, you could give her a joint supplement like Dasuquin and see if that helps. If not, she needs to be examined by a vet. She may have a strain/sprain, or a ligament tear. Your vet can do an orthopedic examination and take xrays to help diagnose. Your vet can also prescribe an anti-inflammtory to help with pain and inflammation. If she has a torn ligamnet, she may need surgery to repair.

She may have ruptured a cruciate ligament (ACL), which is very painful initially, but then the pain sort of gets bearable. The knee is unstable and if it is not fixed , unfortunately, she will develop arthritis in her knee over time. Unfortunately the ACL in the other knee likely will eventually also rupture, as this is a genetic issue. Of course there are other possible causes such as a hip issue. You will need to take your dog to a vet for an exam, and x-rays and then he will discuss with you on how to proceed.
