My vaccinated dog was near distemper. Clear nose discharge, should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 30 lbs

I found a dog and figured out he had distemper. My dog was around him and I'm scared she might get sick. It's been a week since she's been around it. No signs of sickness. She just has a clear discharge from her nose. However it's been 35 degrees all week. I'm not sure what to do. She has been vaccinated for it.

If she has been fully vaccinated then the likelihood of her getting distemper is low. If you have any concerns, however, have her examined by your veterinarian. She may just have a viral respiratory infection. Your vet can do a physical examination, run labwork, and prescribe medications, if needed to treat.

Considering your dog was vaccinated against distemper and hopefully is up to date on her vaccination, there is only a very small chance that she got infected or will get ill with distemper. Unfortunately the dog you found may also have had another disease, so I would observe Rylee for signs of illness such as a thick discharge from the nose, conjunctivitis, coughing , lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea. If any of these signs appear you need to take Rylee to the vet for an exam and treatment.

The vaccine for distemper tends to be highly effective however no vaccine is 100%. There are many things that can make your pup have a runny nose or runny eyes. I think it is best to play it safe in this case and have a cookie examined by her veterinarian. Hopefully it’s nothing serious. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
