Why is my dog immobile with spine pain after steroid treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 7 years and 2 months old | 7 lbs

Hi, my shetland collie mix (7y/o) had a spine infection of sorts over the past 3 weeks which the vet gave steroids for, when the dosage stops her movement gets impaired and she starts to feel a lot of pain. This current relapse (3rd time) has had her completely immobile except for one of her hind legs. she can still move her head and she seems happy, but she simply cant move. what is wrong with my dog?

Poor Socks! It sounds like she may have diskspondylitis, which is inflammation of the vertebral discs due to infection. Because her symptoms return when the medication is done, she may need surgery. It sounds like her spinal cord has been severely compromised, and surgery should be considered to decrease pressure on the spinal cord. This tends to be a specialist surgery, so I would discuss with your vet if this is an option for Socks, and they can make a referral.
