My IBD cat just ate after flare-up. How much food to give to avoid vomiting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 16 years and 11 months old | 3.36 lbs

My cat has irritable bowel disease and has had a flare up and stopped eating. This morning the vet gave him subcutaneous fluids, increased his steroid, gave him a b12 shot and an appetite stimulant. He is now wanting to eat again and has had about a quarter of a can of digestive aid wet food. Should I allow him to eat as much as he likes or limit his food intake a bit in case it makes him vomit? He's prone to vomiting at the best of times. Thank you!

You can feed him another quarter of a can in about 15 minutes. Then again a quarter of a can in a few hours, and the rest again a few hours later. You can slightly warm up the food, if you like.
