Can chronic kidney failure medications cause cancer in older, small dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Norfolk Terrier | Female | spayed | 13 years and 11 months old | 13 lbs

My Norfolk terrier was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure in May, but she died last weekend of a synovial sarcoma. Is there a possible connection between her medications and the cancer as she weighed less than 13 pounds. She had been limping since July and our vet thought it was a ligament tear.

It is not likely that there is a connection between her medications for the chronic kidney failure and the synovial sarcoma. Synovial sarcomas are very aggressive soft tissue tumors that tend to metastasize as well. Here is some good information: http://vetsurgicalcenter.com/synovialcellsarcoma.asp Unfortunately at 13 years tumors seem to be the most common cause of death in dogs. I am very sorry for your loss.
