Why isn't my 3-year-old female dog going into heat? Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 1002 years and 11 months old | 85 lbs

My GSD will be 3 yrs. Old next month. She has never been in heat. Could she have something dangerous inside?

She may be extremely clean and you might not notice when she is in heat. If you intend to breed her I suggest you have her examined by a theriogenologist or veterinarian specialised in dog breeding . She may not be cycling due to ovarian cysts, or may be missing ovaries, or have hormonal problems.

    Some dogs have "silent" heat cycles, meaning that they do not show any outward signs like bleeding or vaginal swelling when they are in heat. So it's possible that Zelda may have having heat cycles regularly that are just not detectable. Or, she could have an ovarian cyst or a tumor of some kind that is suppressing her normal heat cycles. I do think it's something that should be investigated, so I would recommend having her examined by a vet when you are able to. He/she can do a blood test and/or vaginal cytology to help determine if she is having normal heat cycles or not. If there are concerns about whether everything is normal, your vet may recommend spaying Zelda to remove any chance of a problem.
