My dog makes loud swallowing noises at night. Is new food the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 30.8 lbs

Hello, My Beagle has started making these loud swallowing noises in the middle of the night, he is a bit wet around the mouth when it happens, but he doesn't vomit, he just keeps on swallowing and then it stops. We have just started giving him a different food (Orijen), so I am wondering if it might be related to that. Apart from that he is normal, he eats, drinks, and runs around in the parc. Should I be worried about these swallowing events?

It sounds like he could be having some nausea. It could be related to the change in food but if it continues than he should be examined by your vet to determine the cause and then prescribe medications to treat. He may need an antacid or an anti-nausea medication. You could also add a probiotic, like Proviable or Fortiflora to his diet and see if that helps.
