My older dog can't pass stool. Is surgery safe for bowel obstruction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 11 years and 2 months old | 50 lbs

My dog can't pass a stool and she is dripping fecal matter. She's older and I'm concerned that she may have a bowel obstruction. She's a German shepherd and 11 years old. Is surgery harsh on an older dog?

Poor Gracie! If she's otherwise in good health, there's no reason at all that she would have any difficulties with surgery if she needs it. It does sound like something is wrong, so I would recommend having her examined by a vet as soon as you can - he/she can do a rectal exam and may also take x-rays if needed to help determine the problem. If she does end up needing surgery to remove a blockage, your vet can do blood work beforehand to help make sure that she doesn't have any underlying health issues that would cause problems.

Poor Gracie! If you are concerned that she does have a bowel obstruction, she needs to see a vet immediately as this is medical emergency. Surrey does have it's risks, which can be higher in an older dog, but it can be safely performed. If she does have an obstruction and it isn't removed, that will be fatal for her, so surgery is the best option despite her age.
