Why does my cat yowl in the basement after dinner every night and seem fine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 7 years and 3 months old | 11 lbs

My orange female is 6 years old. She's an only cat & seems happy in every way except that many nights after dinner she goes down to the basement & yowls for 10 minutes or so. The first time I ran downstairs thinking she had a kidney stone or had hurt herself, but she was totally fine & seemed surprised to see me. What gives?

If there are windows in your basement she may be reacting to something outside. While cats can certainly vocalize with pain the fact that it's happening around the same time each night makes me think is likely behavioral. If she's acting like her normal self otherwise I wouldn't worry about it too much, but if you think she might be in pain or if she seems disoriented when she's vocalizing you should make an appointment with your veterinarian.
