My cat is licking fur off her back and I feel a lump. Is it a tumor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Female | 13 years and 4 months old | 27 lbs

My cat has licked all her fur off on the area near her ribs and spine, (closer to her spine) I've felt a small lump there but can only feel it when she is laying down sometimes. Once and a while might be able to feel it when she stands up. I can't afford to go to the vet at the moment so just trying to see if it could be a tumor or maybe a small part of her ribs that sticks out a bit more. If she has no lack of appitite or sever weight loss should I be worried?

Cats will over-groom and lick the fur off of areas for a variety of reasons, however in my experience in the area you're describing it's usually related to pain. This could be kidney pain (the kidneys are on either side of the spine in the region of the last rib) or it could be back pain. The other possibility is that the lump you're feeling is indeed some type of tumor which is causing her discomfort. Unfortunately it's impossible for me to say, and while it's good that Ella still has an appetite and no weight loss I don't think we can be sure this isn't something serious because of that. I would definitely urge you to get this checked as soon as you possibly can; consider applying for veterinary credit at carecredit.com.
