Why is my 7-year-old cat nipping at my legs? How can I stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years old | 15 lbs

My cat is 7 years old. He has taken to nipping at my legs. Doesn't do it often. Come to think of it, after I picked him up from my daughter's (we had gone away for a few days and left him with her cat and someone came in to check on them) he nipped me 4 times. He was very upset with me. However, he will, out of the blue, do it as I am walking down the hall usually. Help! Jane Curtis

Behavior issues like this can be difficult. Likely Rocky is playing with you but it hurts! As a suggestion, try carrying a squirt bottle and when he exhibits the bad behavior, squirt him with water. At the same time, provide Rocky with some new toys and regularly rotate them weekly so that the toys stay fresh in Rocky's brain. You can also try feeding Rocky out of a treat ball as this will stimulate his brain and maybe he will stop focusing on this negative play behavior. I hope this helps!
