My cat is crying, pooping blood outside the box. Is he constipated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 years and 1 month old | 12 lbs

Three times in the last 2 weeks my cat will start to whine/cry and then he poops on the nearest rug. I've had him for 8 years and he's never done this. He always uses the litter box. I've noticed there's a little blood in his poop. Any thoughts? Thank you

Fresco sounds like he may be constipated. Here is a link to an article about this condition. There are some helpful hints on how to treat at home. This can be a serious problem so please, if you try some home remedies and he doesn't respond in a couple days you need to take him to your vet for an exam. He could have something more serious like Megacolon. http://www.vetstreet.com/care/constipation-in-cats Hope this helps.

Yes, it sounds like Hank could be constipated. The number one cause of constipation in cats is dehydration. Feed him wet food and add water to it to see if that helps. If it doesn't, he will need to see a vet. Best of luck.
