My cat ate a bird and is sick and lethargic. Does he need a vet?

My cat ate a bird and is looking pretty sick. He doesn't want to eat and seems super lethargic.

Poor Ekko! These signs can be caused by an obstruction (especially if he ingested bones and feathers) or a toxicity (perhaps something that the bird had eaten or made the bird sick). I recommend having Ekko seen by a vet as soon as possible to figure out what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment.

If Rorschach is still feeling bad in the morning I would get him checked by his vet. Depending on the size of the bird and if he swallowed or whole he may have an obstruction of his GI tract or possiblility of bones causing a perforation. if he strains to defecate, begins vomiting definitely get him seen.

I would recommend taking him in tomorrow just for a checkup since it sounds like that is a possibility. They may take an x-ray to make sure nothing looks abnormal. he could just be nauseous from eating something weird (the bird), but anytime there's gagging I think a checkup is warranted

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Yes, he should see a veterinarian. He may not be eating due to dietary indiscretion from eating the bird or mouse or it could even be due to a gastrointestinal obstruction. I am afraid that if he is not drinking water he may be becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and most importantly start him on medications to make him feel better. Miss Deighomay hunted and killed a bird this morning. I didn’t know she had it until I saw the feather evidence. Which means she must of devored the whole thing!! Is there anything I really need to be worried about? I know that it’s normal for cats

If any of these are observed, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, she could be just fine. Have a great day!

I think my cat got into fish bones outside on Sun night. He's been laying in one spot only getting up to switch sides occasionally since Mon. Not interested in eating but has taken some wet food w/water and ate a whole jar of chicken baby food a few
His gums don't look tremendously pale, but the lethargy and discomfort you describe is concerning, and yes, I would take him in. It's hard to say whether the bones could have caused a complete GI blockage, but if he's not defecating at all (or urinating???) then that is a potential concern. Even a serious case of gastroenteritis secondary to eating fish and bones is extremely uncomfortable, and warrants treatment. I would take him in ASAP.

My cat is very lethargic since she came back inside a couple of hours ago. She also hasn't been to the toilet inside for a while and I don't think she's eaten since. However, she still purrs fairly quietly when she is stroked.
I would recommend keeping a very close eye on your cat for the next 12 to 24 hours. When cats are free to roam outside they are more prone to getting in fights and ingesting something toxic. If she does not eat this evening or tomorrow morning and she is still acting lethargic and I would recommend taking her in to your vet to be checked out.

Our 4 months old kitten IZZZY, swallowed a 8 foot string, my brother pulled the string out, although, it was "stuck" for r a few seconds, it then came out. Izzy eats vet little and is lethargic. Before, she was a "whirling dervish," around the house
I would be concerned that Izzy could still have part of the string in her intestines or as the string was passing through her intestines it could have caused holes to form and now she has peritonitis. Izzy needs to get checked out by a veterinarian to make sure that she doesn't have peritonitis. If so she may require surgery to get better.

I strongly recommend getting your cat seen by your vet right away. Lethargy is a worrying sign after such an incident and she must continue to eat or she can develop liver disease in a matter of days. There may be more hair that cannot get back out or that may be causing an intestinal blockage. If this is the case, without treatment it can be life-threatening. Your vet will do an exam, x-rays, possibly lab work, and base don these results will be better able to tell you what is wrong and how best to treat it.
