Why do my guinea pigs have eye discharge but no other symptoms?

2 guinea pigs purchased on 11/24, 3 days ago noticed small amounts of discharge coming from eyes of both pigs. No other signs or symptoms of URI, no lethargy, no hair loss. Still have appropriate eating/drinking/activity. Just concerned and looking for further advice. Thank you

You can take some eye wash like the one below, and rinse out the eyes twice a day for about 5-7 days. If no improvement or they seem worse at any time then you need to get them to a vet for an exam. http://www.allivet.com/p-8131-vetericyn-plus-eye-wash-3-oz.aspx

    Make sure the bedding that you are using is not dusty. As long as the eye looks normal and is not red or irritated it could be nothing serious. Clean with a washcloth daily. If there are any more symptoms or the eye looks irritated then have her checked out

    Although a picture would help to determine the underlying cause of it, that is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. Coke may be experiencing a bit of a respiratory infection, which is causing the discharge and wheezing you are seeing. It would be best to bring him into your vet for a full exam and care. They may recommend medications such as an antibiotic to help get him feeling better.

My guinea pig one eye is closed due to discharge(pus/mucus) coming out of it. I cleared it with luke warm water and saw red lining around the eye lid. Can you suggest some eye drops for that ?
It sounds as Uzi is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in guinea pigs. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes to make sure there is no damage or foreign body in it, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.

Thanks for reaching out about Peanut Butter and including photos. The ocular discharge and crusts are possibly an ocular infection, foreign body in the eye, corneal scratch or other concern. Dental disease (cheek teeth) can place internal pressure on the lacrimal duct and compromise tear flow. Since eating less, could be painful and a veterinary visit is recommended to assist with a diagnostic/treatment plan. You can try offering water and a food slurry via a syringe. Good luck.

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear some of the babies are unwell. Green sticky discharge from the eyes are suggestive of an eye infection. I would recommend getting them to a vet within the next 24 hours, where they can prescribe appropriate antibiotic eye drops. The one that is losing weight may have a more serious systemic infection that requires additional medications. In the meantime, keep the environment clean by changing the dirty bedding daily. Bring the mum close to the babies, especially the sick ones, to encourage them to nurse. Keep them in a warm, non-drafty environment. I hope this helps, and that your little ones feel better soon.

I am so sorry that you are having problems with both of your guinea pigs. Because your other guinea pig had signs of a respiratory (nose, windpipe, and lungs) issue, I would recommend having Peaches evaluated by a veterinarian. Many times, respiratory diseases can be contagious, and may present with abnormalities of the eyes (the eyes and nose are connected, so bacteria and other organisms can spread between them!). From the pictures, the changes appear to be mild right now, which is great as you have caught it early! Other things that can cause both watering of the eyes and respiratory problems is bedding in the cage. Shavings made of pine or cedar can be irritating to both the eyes and the respiratory system, and can result in sneezing and watering of the eyes. Excessively dusty bedding can do the same things. If these are present, I would recommend changing those out and looking for improvement. Your veterinarian will be able to look closely at Peaches' eyes, and take a close liste

I suggest you get this eye ointment to put in the eye 2-3 times per day. If after about 4 days of treatment there is no improvement or if the eye looks worse at any time then you will need to take Chauncey to the vet for an exam. Hello! I have just noticed that my guinea pig seems to have a watery eye and it seems to be red around it, just wondering if you could tell me what it is, what the cause is and how to treat it? Thank you
Poor Pip, it looks like she has developed conjunctivitis. It is inflammation of the eye tissue that can be caused by infection or trauma (like getting bedding in the eye). There is a chance there may be damage to the surface of the eye which could cause an ulcer, usually a vet will put dye in the eye to check for this. Ideally I would take her to a vet to have this checked, but it may be more difficult with the virus. I would ring your normal vet and see what they say about an appointment. You will need an eye drop to treat the eye a d your vet should be able to prescribe this to you based on the symptoms you describe, they may want to see it though. Make sure Pip is still eating well as pain can put GPs off food easily.
