My dog has an itchy red spot that's raised. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello, My Great Dane has been itching quite a lot. I know he tends to get dry skin especially this time of the year, but now he has a quarter size red spot that has protruded. Nothing is coming out of it. Could this be from him scratching or something worse that we should have checked out? Thanks in advance Katie

Hi Katie, I would have that checked out by your vet as soon as possible. It looks worriesome..... It could be something easy like a cyst or plugged hair follicle but it could also be something worse like a tumor. To me, it looks like it could possibly be a mast celll tumor but there is no way for me to know that for sure just by looking at it. Your vet can do a needle aspirate of it to collect some cells and see what it is. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
