My dog ate a cooked bone and threw up bone shards. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 10 months old | 45 lbs

I gave my dog (45 lb hound) a cooked ribeye steak bone last evening (6pm). She seemed to really like it and ate it all. However, she woke me up at about 4:30am and threw up shards of the bone. She seems fine now, but do I need to do anything additional for her?

Withhold food for 12 hours then offer Luna boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put her back gradually on her normal food. If she continues vomiting or is not eating, take her to the vet to get treatment.
