My 4-month-old kitten has sudden runny, smelly diarrhea but is active.

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | unspayed | 4 lbs

I rescued a kitten 2 weeks ago that was abandoned by my grandmother's apartment complex. She's about 4 months old and when I first brought her home her bowel movements were normal. Three days ago she started having real runny diarrhea that looks grainy and smells. She's still eating, drinking plenty of water, and playing. I haven't changed her food. What could be going on?

Congratulations on your new kitten - she is adorable! Alley may have intestinal parasites, which are pretty common in cats living outside. It may have taken about 2 weeks for the symptoms to start as the parasites need to go through their life cycle to start causing problems. The diarrhea may also be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, but these are somewhat less likely. I recommend having her seen by a vet as soon as possible so that the appropriate treatment can be started. She will also need a good physical exam to make sure that she is otherwise healthy. I recommend that you wash your hands thoroughly with warm soapy water after handling Alley's litter, as some of these parasites can be transmitted to people.
