My budgie is sick and I can't find an avian vet. What should I do?

I think my Budgie is sick. What can I do for him? I’m having a hard time finding an avian vet in my area.

Use this link to the Association of Avian Veterinarians website to find an avian vet near you. http://www.aav.org/search/custom.asp?id=1803 In the meantime, keep Watson warm and as stress free as possible. Clean and sanitize his cage, bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. If he eats a pelleted diet, you can soak it in warm water to make a mash. A handfeeding formula can also be offered if necessary. If he is having difficulty perching, lower the perches and pad the bottom of the cage in case he falls.

Platform perches may make it easier for him. If he is sick though, he should be examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian. He may need medication or supportive care. In the meantime, keep the cage clean and make sure he is eating and drinking. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible until he sees the doctor.

Hello! I'm sorry to hear that your budgies are sick. Unfortunately, without knowing what is causing their illness, a treatment can't be recommended. I'm sorry that we can't be of more help, but we cannot legally make treatment recommendations. Even a veterinarian would not be able to recommend treatment without at least examining the birds as the wrong treatment could make them worse. Their symptoms are vague and common for multiple different diseases, ranging from a viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infection, to a traumatic injury or inhalant toxicity. If there is no veterinarian available, the best thing that you can do for your birds is to put them somewhere warm and calm and make sure that they have easy access to food and water. If they have any discharge at their cere or eyes, be sure to keep that clean with a soft cloth and warm water. Good luck, and I hope that your budgies get well soon.

It is critical to have the underlying cause(s) diagnosed before an effective treatment can be administered. Until you do that, you're simply guessing and possibly wasting time. Millie needs to be physically examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime, keep her warm and as stress free as possible. Use a hand feeding formula and warm water to make a mash or paste that she may eat. You can also soak a pelleted diet in a small amount of apple juice to stimulate the appetite. Discuss payment plans or alternative financing options, such as CareCredit ( www.carecredit.com ), with the veterinarian or office manager. Ask friends and family to assist you financially if possible.

I'm sorry to hear about Sky. Unfortunately, those symptoms sound like he is extremely ill and needs to be treated in person. Even if you don't have a bird vet, seeing if there is anyone that will take a look at him (regular vet, wildlife rehab, etc) is best as there is likely not much you can do at home. You can move him to a hospital cage that is kept warm with low perches and easy access to food and water, but it sounds like he needs care in person by a vet.

Unfortunately, these symptoms point to illness. A visit to your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet would be recommended. Birds are quite adept at concealing illness, so by the time they are showing symptoms, they are already quite ill. For now, clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Use paper towels on the bottom and change daily. Keep the cage away from strong drafts and keep your budgie warm and as stress free as possible until she sees the doctor.

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do from home without veterinary care if she is already showing signs of illness. However there are some things that may help make her more comfortable to hopefully make it until your vet appointment. Keeping her in a small hospital cage that is kept warm can help with body temperature regulation. Perches should be low to the ground or removed completely, and soft bedding placed at the bottom of the cage in case she falls. Having food and water (if she is still eating on her own) in shallow dishes she can get in and out of even if weak is best. If she's not eating or drinking, you may need to make a slurry of baby bird food and water and drop feed it to her to help keep her energy up. Otherwise, monitoring her and any changes in her symptoms can help when your vet is able to see her.

Thanks for reaching out about Pearl. It is illegal to recommend or prescribe any medications without seeing a patient, so that is not possible. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give comfort. Removing perches and providing a soft towel on which to stand will require less energy expenditure. Maybe a dog/cat veterinary can at least provide some antibiotics or consult with another veterinarian. There is a fair chance this is not bacterial in nature, including metabolic (liver, renal), ingested toxins (plants, metals), other. Good luck.

Offer water via a small syringe. Possibilities include infections, metabolic disorders (liver, kidney), ingested or inhaled toxins. Once again, a veterinary visit on emergency is recommended.
