My dog has diarrhea after antibiotics and stress. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 34 lbs

Several weeks ago, my dog was bitten by a tick for the first time. I removed it promptly, but took her to the vet after it became inflamed. Vet put her on antibiotics. I later noticed some spots along her back that scabbed. Everything is healing well, but this morning she has diarrhea. She’s been through a move lately and I left for Thanksgiving, so she’s been under stress. Should I be worried?

The diarrhea could be from stress, antibiotics, something she ate, a parasite, or an infection. If she is otherwise acting normal then you could withhold food for the day and then try a small amount of a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice tonight. You could also add a probiotic (Proviable, Fortiflora, etc.) to her diet. If the diarrhea resolves continue feeding the bland diet for a few days and then slowly transition back to her normal food. If the diarrhea continues and/or she starts vomiting, has a decreased appetite, or becomes lethargic then she needs to be examined by a vet.
