My dog's loose front teeth bleeding after tug of war. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My dog was playing tug of war when we noticed blood on the corner of his mouth. His 3 front teeth are loose. What should I do? If they come off will it affect his eating ability in the near future?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If they do fall off usually that will not affect eating that much. However, if they are loose that is usually indicative of an underlying dental issue so I would recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!

Poor Ryuk! I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Ryuk. Unfortunately, once a tooth is loose, it should generally be removed to prevent further pain. I would also worry that Ryuk has some dental disease that allowed for the tooth to loosen during play, so having your veterinarian perform a dental cleaning may be recommended as well to prevent problems with other teeth. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
