My cat won't eat dry food. Is mixing wet food healthy and how much?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 months and 23 days old | 10 lbs

My cat is one year old. I used to feed or wet and not just dry. I’ll occasionally give her wet food like once every two months. she just stopped eating her dry food. She will paw around the plate. I mixed some wet food in and she ate that. She is playing and cleaning her self. She doesn’t seem sick. Why would she just randomly stop eating dry food? Should I be concerned? Is wet food healthy to mix in with dry food and if so how much should I feed her a day?

I would suggest you take Alice to your vet for an exam to have her teeth checked. She may have an issue that is causing her pain to the point where chewing hard food hurts. It is fine to mix wet food with dry. I would need to know what type/brand of food you are feeding to give you any idea of how much you should feed her. Every single type of food you see has a different amount of calories per cup or can of food so there is no blanket amount that I can say to feed her. I can tell you that the average indoor cat should eat about 20 calories per day for every pound of body weight. So, if she is 10 pounds she can eat about 200 calories per day. Just look at the bag/can of food you are feeding as it should tell you how many calories is in it and then you can go from there. Do not exceed the 200 calories per day. Hope this helps.
