My senior dog has diarrhea and smelly gas. What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 3 months old | 60 lbs

My 10 year old dog hasn’t been acting like himself lately. He pooped on the upstairs carpet (diarrhea) and keeps on passing gas that is extremely smelly. Our vet is not around right now and I’m not quite sure of what to do! Please help!!

It sounds like Ty has an upset stomach. I recommend calling your veterinarian tomorrow morning and seeing if they can see Ty. In the mean time I recommend making sure Ty doesn't get anything but a bland diet (you can do boiled chicken and white rice). As long as he is not vomiting, there is no blood and he is not over lethargic then it is ok to wait until tomorrow to have her seen. If any of these symptoms occur then I recommend taking Ty to an emergency veterinarian. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
