Should my senior cat with a polyp get surgery for his balance issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | 12 years and 9 months old | 10 lbs

My 13yo cat was falling over while walking. Took him to emergency vet ,about 3 weeks ago. They said most likely vertigo but he also has polyp. Gave him antibiotics, ear and oral drops. He got better. Now seems like he's walking w head tilted and slightly unsteady. Still better than before. Should I bring him back for surgical removal of polyp? Will that help? His age it's okay to go thru a surgery? What's recovery like? Is it costly ?

I would recommend bringing him back to the veterinarian. The polyp removal may or may not help but it is recommended to have it removed. I would talk to your regular veterinarian to see exact cost of the surgery since every place is different. They would be able to see the polyp on their physical examination and give you a proper quote. As long as on physical examination Duncan looks good and he blood work is good then I would recommend even at his age it is ok to go through the surgery. They typically recover very well and quickly. He may need a few days of medications. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
