Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Female | unspayed | 25 lbs
My dog's tail has been peeling lately. What can I do? Is there a home remedy solution to this? It's not looking great at the moment. I'm very concerned. What does this mean?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This depends on which part of the tail is affected. If it is the base of the tail and she is itchy, it may be allergies, most likely flea allergies based on the location. Other possible allergies could also be the cause. There is no home remedy for allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. For skin allergies I recommend multiple products as numbered below. These products can all be found online quite easily. If there is no improvement or the skin condition worsens I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Stella. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. 1. Welactin omega 3 fish oil 2. Essential 6 spot on by dermoscent 3. Duoxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly until the area resolved 4. Bio Balm by dermoscent and apply to the area until resolved
