Cat with liver disease mated. Can she get pregnant? Is spaying safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a 2 year old dwarf cat with liver problems who recently had her first periods. She was born as a result of a mistaken contraceptive regimen administered to her mother by our ex-vet. She went into heat after such a long time only when our new vet suggested liver meds and vitamins. She always have had trouble digesting and defecating. Thing is, while in heat, she also mated with a tom around a week back. Now what do I do? Can she conceive? Is it safe to spay her? Can she bear anesthesia?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about your cat. These are all impossible questions to answer maybe even for your vet who has examined her. Time will tell if she conceived. Liver problems can certainly complicate anesthesia but a liver protocol could certainly be followed if you elected to spay her. I would consult with the vet who knows the most about this case. Good luck
