Should my puppy sleep in my bed or crate? Will it cause problems?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 3 months and 24 days old | 18.8 lbs

Oct 19th I got an 11 week old rescue puppy. from day one he has done great in the crate at night. Since then I have had him sleep on my bed off and on. Sometimes, only half the night. Is this bad for him? I am single and it is nice to have a cuddle buddy sometimes. He is good in crate, but seems to prefer my bed. Do not want him to become dependent on me. Training to visit hospitals and rehabs as a therapy visiting dog. I always had older dogs who slept on my bed. Have never brought up a puppy.

In my personal opinion, this is not a problem at all, i have never seen any negative effect on a puppy sleeping on it's owner's bed rather than in a crate. as long as you are comfortable with the idea that he is likely to always want to sleep on your bed in the future it's absolutely fine.
