My new rescue cat won't play or show interest in toys. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I recently rescued a stray cat. She has a vet appointment next week. However, I am concerned about her lack of play. She eats well, she drinks well. But, aside from that, all she wants to do is lay down in a basket of blankets or towels. She has no interest in toys and when I try to engage play with her, she seems aggravated and at times, almost afraid of certain toys. Is this normal?

Congratulations on your new cat! It is absolutely normal for her to be getting used to her environment. I recommend introducing toys slowly, and letting her play on her own time, especially if you do not know what her lifestyle was like prior to living with you. I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have!
