My new rescue cat won't play or show interest in toys. Is this normal?

I would give her some more time. I would also entice her to come out with some new toys and even an interactive laser. I say give them at least 2 weeks to become fully comfortable with the new house. Continue to encourage her to come out of her shell. Keep the environment peaceful and quiet. Continue to try to entice her to play. Try different types of toys to see if you find anything she is interested in. Cats will eventually come around to trust their primary care taker. Using a pheromone diffuser can help her in general to combat anxiety. Providing many hiding places and areas where she can get up high can also help. She may be stressed from the change in environment. Give her a few days to adjust. You could get a Feliway diffuser to help with the adjustment. If she seems lethargic or stops eating, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause.

Moving to a new home can be very scary for new pets. Bring Claymore the food and water and put them next to his hiding area (if he is under the bed, put the dishes under the bed). Also bring in his litter box close to the area. Giver him a few days to get use to things. This may be stress and her being scared due to all the new changes. Since she ate a little I would give it a little more time to see if she comes around unless she starts vomiting or not eating at all. If she is. It better after another a day then I would get her checked

She might feel well enough to be friendly, but does not have the extra energy to engage in any play. Otherwise, she may just be one of those mysterious cats that we find so frustrating to figure out. Poor Onyx! She sounds quite scared. I would continue to allow her to familiarize herself with her new environment and you as her new ‘human’. Some cats will be quite sociable from the outset, others take time to adjust to new surroundings. Provide her with plenty of hiding places where she can be safe, give her space to become acclimated, and ensure she has food and water available in a safe location. You can spend time just sitting on the floor near her, maybe tease her with a toy on a string and see if you can coax her closer. Take it nice and slow with her and I suspect that soon she will be bouncing all over the house!

I usually recommend getting toys a cat likes to play with, and that depends on the individual cat. Some cats like to chase balls, others like toys with catnip in it, and some love feathers attached to strings. I personally really like the Catit brand of toys, they have this Senses Play Circuit with a ball in it, and it encourages a cat to play but they can do it on their own. I would go to a pet store and get a variety of five toys to see what Keke may like best. Moving into a new home is stressful for a cat, and it will take time for her adjust. Be patient. Yes, it may take a day or two for her to relax. I recommend confining her to a room or two that is quiet with her food water and litter. Leave her alone overnight so she can have privacy and minimal stress. Giving some wet food may encourage her to eat. You can spend some time in her place several times during the day but I’d keep her in there until she’s eating and using the litter box. Offer two litter boxes in two separate, quiet areas, and close to where she is hiding. Eventually, she should know that your presence means food, safety and companionship, and she will come out of her shell.
