Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Bobtail | Female | spayed | 1 year and 7 months old

Button has broken right hind leg with torn loose hock joint in a hard cast with overwrap . She’s gotten very dirty with urine and debris since Saturday when iwas put in Her . I keep her in a confined space but also let her rest on my lap for few hours a day maybe five when she wants to to keep her from running on it she can’t go to litter box unassisted . My question actually two parts Can I bathe her just sponge her off with organix coconut shampoo and also does it hurt her to walk? Worried mom

Poor Button! Typically depending on where the fracture of the leg is and damage to the joints a basic cast might not result in complete healing. However, it is really important the cast stays dry and clean. IF the cast gets wet it can cause infection under the cast. If you feel the cast is dirty and wet I would recommend taking Buttons back to the vet to have it checked. However, if you feel it is clean and just buttons is dirty. A small sponge bath with just warm water to keep her back end clean is okay. I would let her set her own limitations. Typically in cast cat can walk a little bit and will learn over time how to get around better while it heals. I hope that helps
