Can salmon oil cause greasy fur & scabs in cats with fish allergy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 lbs

My 2 yr old rescue had diarrhea all 4 months he has been with me. He was treated for IBD with metro for 7 days. I also discovered that he is allergic to turkey and fish. I have been feeding him Natural Balance Venison and Green Pea LID wet food. He did well with the metro, and finally had solid and semi solid stools. Natural Balance failed, and added salmon oil to their LID foods! Onyx has greasy fur, flakes and scabs again. Can salmon oil do this? Or am I missing something?

It's definitely possible that the salmon oil was the cause of this if he has a diagnosed fish allergy. I recommend discontinuing the fish oil and bathing him every two days with a medicated cat shampoo (can get this at the pet store) to help remove the greasy residue. If this is not cleared within three weeks, or he is having further issues, then it's likely due to something else and will require a veterinarian to accurately diagnose the cause. I hope that helps and Onyx gets better soon.
