Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I highly recommend that you have Nico evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Black tarry stools can be observed with upper gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding. Things like parvovirus, gastrointestinal ulcers or parasites, among other possibilities can cause that. Good luck!

Dark, tarry stool is an indication of a small intestinal bleed possibly from the bone or an ulcer. The main thing to continue to monitor for is bloody diarrhea with frank, red blood, vomiting and lethargy. If any of this is noted, you will need to find an ER clinic for further care. You can feed boiled chicken and rice since it is bland and easy to digest until the stool returns to normal.

Dark tarry stools can be a sign of bleeding in the intestinal tract, so I would recommend monitoring your puppy closely and if the stools continue to have this appearance, or if he stops eating, vomits, or becomes weak he should see the veterinarian.
