My senior dog's leg lump burst open. Is it painful? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 15 years old | 60 lbs

My dog is older, almost 15 human years. He is a beagle who has lumps all over, his tummy, his back & neck. There is a tumor/lump above his hind leg that has started coming out of the skin & today I can tell it has busted. I’m not sure what I should do. How painful is this for him?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What i am seeing in the pictures is likely a sebaceous cyst that ruptured. These are common with older dogs and are benign. When these rupture there is a chance they will become infected so the best treatment is to have it removed to prevent this from happening. I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian about having this removed. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
