My dog's low WBC increased on antibiotics. Is bone marrow failing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 1 month old | 7.5 lbs

My dog has had a blood test and it shows he has a low white blood cell count. The vets are saying they want to do a bone marrow biobsy to rule out failure. However, my dog has been on antibiotics and the WBC have began to increase. Would this happen if the bone marrow was failing?

Hello, sorry to hear about Theo. This is really dependent on the type of infection. If the infection is responding well to antibiotics and her bone marrow is now starting to show evidence that it may be working, then you could likely hold off on obtaining a bone marrow biopsy after consulting it with your veterinarian. Alternatively, if the bone marrow is not responding adequately, or if an underlying cause for such a low WBC count is not able to be determined, then a bone marrow biopsy is likely the next best diagnostic step. Hope this helps and best of luck.
