Why is my old dog drinking too much water and always hungry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 16 lbs

My old dog has been drinking water excessively. Started a few months ago. He has fat tumors all along his back but has been healthy most of his life. He has gained a lot of weight in the past 5 years. He recently had surgery for an eye fungus which he recovered from nicely. He is always hungry and gulps food.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Excessive water intake can be seen with conditions such as urinary tract infections, and metabolic conditions such as Cushing's disease to name a few. Given that Chico is also showing signs of being hungry, it is possible that he has something called Cushing's disease which is a metabolic condition which at times requires treatment. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian who can test for that if it makes sense based on further history and physical examination. Good luck!
