What causes brown spots and chips on my puppy's front teeth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Female | unspayed | 25 lbs

We noticed chips surrounded by a brown area on either side of our 7 month old puupies lower front canine. We are wondering wether they are slab fractures or some other tooth problem. Photos below. Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures. The brown on the teeth is enamel hypoplasia. Enamel formation occurs around 2 weeks to 3 months of age. Anything like trauma, a fever, nutritional deficiencies, infection, metabolic abnormalities, toxins and parasites that occur in that window can cause enamel hypoplasia. Distemper viral infections and other Morbillivirus species infections are commonly recognized as causes. I hope this helps and have a great day!
