Is it normal for a pregnant dog to shiver and refuse breakfast?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Belgian Laekenois | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 5 months old | 58 lbs

I have a question re: my 30 days bred bitch Izze. She has short bouts of shivering. Everything else, appetite, activity, stools, attitude, etc are normal with the exception of increase in appetite for the past few days. This morning she refused breakfast, came in the house and began to shiver. Her temp is 100.5. She has an appt. at UN of TN Vet School tomorrow for a pregnancy ultrasound. Any idea? Panic or not? Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Since you are seeing a vet tomorrow and Izze is eating and everything else is normal I wouldn't panic. There are many reasons for a dog to shiver: fear, maybe the babies are starting to move causing discomfort, a fever (though her temperature is normal), and pain (she wouldn't be acting normal). I wish you luck for her ultrasound! Have a great day!
