What causes black tarry stools, vomiting, and lethargy in senior dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My 11 year old chi has been anorexic, vomit a few times, and lethargic for 3 weeks. She also has had black and tarry diarrhea/stools? What could cause this. The xrays were good, her first blood test were good, I am having more done to check for pancreas/Addison's ect. . Steroids make her more like herself and wanting to eat. She is scheduled for an ultrasound this week. She wants to eat the hard kibble food, which I gave her a few pieces, but not bland or Royal Canin RS which I have to syringe.

Stomach ulcer, pancreatitis, Addison’s, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancers are all in my lists. If she hasn’t had a broad spectrum deworming then I would do that for sure even if fecal tests were negative. Also- if she has been on steroids she needs to wait weeks, Even months before the ACTH test for Addison’s can be run. It sounds like you and your veterinarian are on the right path to help find the cause. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
