My dog has a squishy lump on his leg near an injection site. What will the vet do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Male | neutered | 10 years and 11 months old | 52 lbs

My dog has a mass under his front leg. It feels very squishy, suggesting it is fluid filled. About a year ago he had an injection as part of treatment for something else and there was always a lump there afterwards. This new swelling is in the same area as that injection. He is booked in for the vet tomorrow but I am wondering what they will likely do.

They will feel what the mass is attached to and see about aspirating some cells for a cytology. This can give them an idea of what the cause is. If the cells are inflammatory or infection, then they may try antibiotics to shrink it. If they see tumor cells, they may recommend surgery to remove it
