Dog's aggressive tumor was hard, now soft. Does this mean progression?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 38 lbs

Our 3 year old un desexed border collie was diagnosed with an aggressive malignant carcinoma 4 weeks ago as it came on so quickly and double in size in a week that it was to aggressive and surgery would likely not help the prognosis. It started at15cm went to 30cm until not it has been quite firm and hard to move yesterday we noticed it has become very soft does this mean progression?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The tumor being now soft does not necessarily mean progression. However, this may mean something like bleeding into the tumor capsule which sometimes is seen with tumors. If this appears to be affecting Scout's quality of life, I recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!
