My dog has food allergies. Is her heavy breathing an allergy symptom?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 36 lbs

My small dog, a Weimaraner-chihuahua mix, has food allergy and scratches her right ear. We are feeding her special allergy food for 3 weeks now and is improving. But now she has eventual attacks of heavy breathing. Like a difficulty breathing in her upper respiratory system. Is it because of the allergy?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While this can be due to allergies especially if these are resulting in upper respiratory signs, this seems less likely. I think it is more likely to be due to something else like a concurrent upper respiratory infection. I highly recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!
