Why is my 2-year-old cat gagging and meowing less or hoarsely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Exotic Shorthair | Male | unneutered

I have a cat that's about 2 years old and recently he's been gagging a lot but has only thrown up twice. Then he suddenly reduced his meowing. He used to meow everytime he wanted to go outside or everytime he wanted to play or eat but now he doesn't. It seems as if he has trouble meowing because he opens his mouth but nothing comes out. Or if he does meow it sounds hoarse, this has never happened before so we're afraid he might have a disease or something. Please help me understand what is wrong

Hello, sorry to hear about Willy, it certainly does sound as if something could be going on. With his clinical signs, you may choose to investigate any abnormalities within the GI tract but also diseases outside of the GI tract. This can be done with baseline bloodwork, x-rays of his belly and even an abdominal ultrasound. Most likely rule outs would be a viral or parasitic infection, inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, liver disease, or pancreatitis. Have your veterinarian evaluate Willy if these signs persist as soon as possible. Hope this helps and best of luck
