My dog has a dark purple spot on her skin and losing hair. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 25 lbs

I was bathing my dog today, and I found a a dark purple spot that wasn't there about a week ago on her side. It doesn't seem to hurt her upon touching. It seems like her hair is falling off in that area. It appears to be on her skin, not internal. What could this be?

It is hard to say from a photo but it looks like necrotic skin - maybe from a spider (or other insect) bite/sting. I would suggest a vet visit - not an emergency. That black skin is necrotic (basically dying skin) and usually antibiotics are needed to keep it from getting infected. Hope this helps.
