What causes a dog's red, oozing ear with thick discharge and head shaking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 115 lbs

My dog has thick back stuff only in one ear. He’s been shaking his head lots and now it’s very red and kind of oozing. When I clean it he’s not bothered like it hurts. It doesn’t have an odor. He’s a 5yr old Great Dane. Ears are not cropped. The pics are after cleaning The gunk out

Poor Jersey's ear looks red and inflamed! His symptoms are indicative of an ear infection, and he will need to see a vet as soon as possible for it. Ear infections can be caused by bacteria, yeast, or ear mites, so the vet will need to confirm he does have an ear infection, what is causing it, and then can prescribe the correct treatment for him. It's very important to have him seen as soon as you can because leaving this untreated can lead to hearing loss. Good luck, I hope this helps!
