Why is wet food important for cats, and what are its pros and cons?

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Some cats are carbohydrate junkies and just prefer dry over canned food. It is fine for them to eat just dry. But if you want to convert them to canned food then you have to do so gradually. There are benefits to canned food, like more moisture content. If you leave dry food down all the time it is best to do scheduled feedings. So start feeding the dry food to 3-4 meals per day and only leave it down for 20 mins. Make sure you make it known to your cats it is mealtime so they know to eat. Once they have all accepted the new mealtime and eat well then start offering canned food instead of dry. Some may gobble it up right away, others may turn their nose up. Try warming it up. Don't leave it out for more than 20 mins because the flavor changes as it drys out and never serve it cold from the fridge. You can sprinkle a little dry on top of the wet or mix it in, if that works then gradually decrease the amount of dry you use over time. Just be awar

I recommend twice a day feedings and you will have to take a look at the calories per can / cup with the current food you are feeding and measure it out equally so that you are feeding 280 calories worth per day. In most cases now we actually recommend wet/canned food for urinary tract health and kidney health because cats have a tendency to not take in enough water otherwise! So I would recommend canned/wet food. I am a fan of purina pro plan foods. They also have foods specific to ages (adult, adult 7+, adult 11+ ) to choose from depending on your cat's age and can be found at most pet stores.

Some cats prefer canned food and some prefer dry. It is okay to just feed canned food as long as it is a balanced diet. It is actually better for some cats with urinary issues to be fed canned food because of the increased water content as cats in general are not avid drinkers. One of the things we have found is that wet food is actually healthier for cats than dry food. I feed my cats wet food only. It is better for their kidneys long term and seems to help prevent obesity since dry food has to have carbohydrates in it that cats can't utilize well. Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. Some cats have very definite preferences for how their food is prepared. Do not worry that Salem just does not like the moist food. I assume you are concerned about water intake, but as long as their is always fresh water available, she will get what she needs. Some cats really enjoy moving water, & this is an option to increase fluid intake. You can either let a faucet drip for a time, or purchase a pet water fountain. But keep feeding the Science Diet. This is an excellent choice for Salem. Take care.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If your goal is urinary tract health then canned food is better than wet because there is more water content. The increased water content dilutes the urine so if they have crystals they would have less crystals voided in more dilute urine thus causing less irritation. Have a great day!

Many cats who did not get wet food when they were kittens never will eat wet food. You can continue with a small amount of wet food once daily and cut back on the dry to see if they will eat more when they are hungry. I like giving some wet food as it makes them take in more fluids. Dry is fine just make sure they have access to plenty of fresh water. You can try adding some canned pumpkin also.
