My gerbil has a red lump, isn't eating, shaking. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Other | Unknown - Other | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 9 months old

I have a gerbil called yogi and recently spotted a red lump in her stomach which from photos I like looks like a scent gland tumour. It’s hard to get a good look as even thought I’ve had her 2 years, she never lets me hold her. She is still drinking but I haven’t seen her eat for days, which is very unlike her. Today I caught her shaking in her corner which did stop but is worrying. Is it too late for her and is she in a lot of pain so should get her put down or wait a while? Cheers

Without a physical exam, it is difficult to determine what the lump is and what her medical status is currently. Ideally, she should be examined by your veterinarian. Antibiotics can be dispensed for minor infection. A fine needle aspirate can be done to collect samples for pathology. She is "old" for a gerbil, but more information would be needed before determine a course of action, let alone euthanasia.
