My chihuahua is coughing and throwing up water. Is it kennel cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 4 lbs

Hello. My dog (chihuahua) keeps coughing and throws up what appears to just be water or bubbles sometimes. I have tried to google and search about and think maybe she has kennel cough but I’m not sure. Do I need to take her to a vets? She sometimes does a gurgling type thing as if she is going to throw up but has only done that a couple of times. She tends to randomly start coughing then stop but I don’t want her to be in pain, other than occasional coughing she is totally normal and energetic.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She could be having a productive cough which should not be confused with vomiting. Being a chihuahua, this could be congestive heart failure. Many other things can cause similar symptoms like pneumonia. For this reason, I do think that you should have Luna evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!
